About the teacher
Dr. Jennifer Martyn is a dedicated teacher with over fifteen years of experience teaching students of all ages and levels, from two year old beginners, to graduate-level university students, to adults playing in community orchestras.
Jennifer teaches the Suzuki method to children and beginners, and many of these students have also taken RCM exams and participated in local music festivals, as well as chamber music ensembles and youth orchestras. Jennifer also teaches at the university level, previously at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Music, and currently at Lakehead University. Jennifer has been an adjudicator of music festivals in Brantford, Ottawa, Timmins, as well as the Ontario Music Festivals Association provincial competition.
Trained in the Suzuki Method, Jennifer has been a faculty member of Ottawa Suzuki Strings, Etobicoke Suzuki Strings, and North York Suzuki School of Music, has run several summer camps, acted as a clinician at Suzuki workshops, and served on the board of the Suzuki Association of Ontario.
Jennifer holds degrees in violin performance from the University of Toronto (BMus and DMA), and Mannes College, the New School for Music (MMus).
Outside of teaching, Jennifer is a member of the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra and conducts the youth choir at Trinity United Church. In her free time she loves to spend time with friends and family, puzzles and board games, good food, and travel.
About our classes
Private Violin lessons
Violin students have weekly private lessons. The length of the lesson depends on the level and age of the student. This is where students learn new technique and get individual instruction from their teacher. Parents are required to attend lessons for young children, and play a vital role in their child’s music education. Recitals are held throughout the year, giving students a chance to perform for family and friends, and to celebrate their hard work.
Suzuki Group Classes
Group classes are an important part of a Suzuki education, and they are so much fun! Suzuki students join in weekly group classes in addition to their private lessons. In these classes with their peers, students get the chance to learn ensemble skills, use their ears in new ways, and to practice and reinforce skills learned in their private lessons. The classes are a great way to make friends in music, and to begin learning the skills they will use later in chamber music ensembles and orchestras, in fun and engaging ways! Group classes have a few chances to perform during the year in class concerts, school presentations, and holiday performances. Once they reach the appropriate age and level, students are encouraged to join the Junior Strings orchestra and later the Thunder Bay Symphony Youth Orchestra.

Theory Classes
Music theory is an important part of every musician’s education. Group theory classes are a great way to work through your material alongside your peers. Students encourage each other, learn from each other, and have a lot of fun! Private theory instruction and tutoring is also available.
